Liska as a Hub of Jewish Tradition

Since the early 1800s, Liska has been a key center of Jewish life, known for its thriving cultural and religious community. Thousands of pilgrims come annually to pay homage to Tzvi Hirsh Liska, also revered as Hershele Lisker. Liska is home to over 500 Jewish heritage sites, from cemeteries to synagogues reflecting a long history. By the late 19th century, the Jewish population of Liska reached nearly 3,000, enriching its cultural environment. The influence of Liska’s heritage extends to nearby towns like Kerestir, shaping Jewish life across Hungary. Today, Liska attracts around 5,000 visitors annually, each drawn by its historical and spiritual significance.

Liska’s heritage preservation is maintained by the combined support of local and international groups.
